James Smith

Hello! My name is Dr. James Smith and I am a Research Fellow from the School of Engineering and Sciences(SES) where I do research into Computational Systems Biology, exploring the organisation and behaviour of metabolic pathways.  I also teach aspects of Computational Biology to masters students.

I am British and was born and grew up in the City of Sheffield in a part of England called South Yorkshire.  I studied Biological Sciences at the University of Leicester, then doctoral studies in Biochemistry at the University of Oxford and further doctoral studies in Computational Molecular Pharmacology, Drug Design and Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Cambridge.  Since 2001, my postdoctoral research has been at the University of Cambridge and then I moved to Germany working at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg.  In 2007, I joined Jacobs University Bremen because it is such an exciting international university in the heart of Europe.

Without any doubt, Mercator College is probably the best and nicest residential college to live in when you apply to come to Jacobs University. The residential college has everything for new students, a lovely international atmosphere, nice rooms and good facilities. Mercator has the best college staff to help you. Mercator has the friendliest College Masters and of course supportive and helpful Residence Associates who are always there to try and help you with your personal and private needs. Mercator is known throughout the university for having the most interesting and multicultural and artistic undergraduates. There are students in Mercator from every year of their studies and now even a few postgraduates who can chat to you about future possibilities and jobs after you graduate.

I joined Mercator College as the first of a refreshing new generation of Resident Associates starting in 2008/2009. I am a research-active academic, providing "Academic Support" just for Mercator students.

What does "Academic Support" mean?

Well, you and your friends from similar subject areas will be able to make appointments and discuss how you are finding your courses each semester... or whether you are getting the most out of your Academic Advisors... or what ideas you have for internships... or what would you like from the Student Careers Service... or what I can do to help you get the most out of living and studying in Jacobs University.

If you would like a chat, or have just locked yourself out of your room, do come over to the end of the C3 corridor (C Block, 3rd floor). If you need me,  ring me on extension 5486.  I will be very delighted to see you and we can have some lovely tea and biscuits or scones ... or cake!
