Afternoon Tea with Sir Harold Kroto
Mercator College had the great pleasure and honour to host Prof. Harold Kroto for an informal social visit on Tuesday May 27. Prof. Kroto is a faculty member at the Florida State University. In 1996, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on C60 and the subsequent discovery of Fullerene (for more details see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fullerene).
The event was shaped as an open, unofficial discussion with afternoon tea (and some delicious cake) in the Mercator Common Room. Prof. Kroto came across as an open-minded, down-to-earth individual who was very willing to answer all sorts of questions from the curious students, who relished the chance to have close contact with such a distinguished scientist. Among the touched topics were religion, politics, future development in chemistry and science as a whole, as well as some personal advise to the young Jacobs chemists, concerning their future careers.
